COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP-- From doggy doos to ways to keep your cat feeling clean this summer, there are all sorts of ways to pamper your pet in the warmer months.
Newswatch 16’s Ryan Leckey stopped by “Rachel Ann’s Country Clips Pet Grooming” in Coolbaugh Township in Monroe County for some stylin’ ideas.
Ryan also talks about the dos and don'ts for upcoming summer parties and barbecues that could effect your pets.

Other Summer Safety Tips from Rachel:
Parties/Barbecues/Picnics:
- Heat Stroke: Make sure that your pet has plenty of water, somewhere to rest, and as much shade as possible.
- Food Intake: Avoid corn cobs and as well as other unsafe foods. Make sure your guests don't over feed your pets to prevent pancreatitis.
4th of July:
- One in five pets run away on July 4th. Keep pets indoors in a safe and comfortable place, the thundercoat or medication from your veterinarian can be beneficial for the high stressed pet on the 4th of July.
Traveling with Your Pets:
- Heat Stroke: Never leave a pet in a hot car for even a few minutes. The temperature inside of a car can rise almost 20 degrees in only ten minutes. Hundreds of pets die each year from being left inside of a vehicle.
- Dog Parks: Make sure to have your pet fully vaccinated and on a parasite preventative ten days prior to socializing them. Bring plenty of water for your pet if it is not provided at the park.
- Walking and Hiking: If you take your pet out on a trail or for a walk, try using a protective wax or even walking booties. Pay close attention to how your pet is walking to avoid any discomfort. Pavement and asphalt can get extremely hot in the summer even when the outside temperature doesn't reflect that.
- Swimming: Dry the inside and outside of the ears of your pet as best as possible after swimming to keep them clean, making sure they are as dry as possible after a swim.
Traveling Far Away:
- Research common diseases for the are you are traveling and vaccinate your pet accordingly.
Double Coated NO NO’s:
- If you have a double coated breed, such as Huskies or Pomeranians, make sure not to shave them down.
- A double coated breed's hair is there for many reasons, protecting them from cold or hot weather and will shed naturally.
- Dogs pant to release heat, they do not release that heat from their skin like humans do. Shaving an animal down will not make them cooler, but actually have the opposite effect. Every hair has a muscle that allows it to flex, letting the air circulate to keep the external temperature of your dog's body cooler.
- Keep your dog brushed out at home to get rid of unwanted undercoat that can cause over heating, matting, sores and other health issues.
