MOUNT POCONO -- Mount Pocono Borough marked the Memorial Day holiday with a somber ceremony this morning.

The sidewalk in front of the Mount Pocono Borough building in Monroe County was filled with red, white, and blue and dozens upon dozens of community members marking Memorial Day.

Marine veteran and Private First Class Jay Rake of Mount Pocono was among the many honoring our fallen military men and women.

"We come every year. My family and I come every year and from here we go to all of the cemeteries where all our family are buried," said Rake.

The members of VFW Post 3448 placed a wreath at the memorial in the front of the borough building while the commander was presented an American flag that came from the US Capitol.

"It's freedom. It represents freedom. Many people who see the stars and stripes realize what we are all about, America," said VFW Post 3448 Commander George Piller.

Veterans say what was most moving about the ceremony in Mount Pocono was the turnout of people in the borough, both young and old.

"This year I was surprised. I came down the street. We live right around the corner. I couldn't believe all of the people who were here," said Rake.

Michael Straub of Mount Pocono and his 8-year-old son Connor say they wouldn't have missed this for anything.

"I think today is very important," said Connor Straub.

"When it comes to honoring our veterans, I think it's important that we honor both those who are living and those who have sacrificed the most amazing sacrifice a person could give, their life," said Michael Straub.
