LUZERNE COUNTY -- Five children have been accidentally shot so far this year in Pennsylvania and there is a new campaign to help keep children safe.

In March, a two-year-old boy in Montoursville shot himself with a loaded .45 caliber gun. Zackary Lee survived.

According to statistics, there have been 25 deaths nationwide so far this year as a result of unintentional child shootings folks Newswatch 16 spoke with said that is 25 deaths too many.

The groups Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America have launched a campaign called "Be SMART," an effort to reduce child shootings.

"Pistols should definitely be kept out of reach. They can be locked up. They can be put on top of a closet so children can not get out a pistol," said Raymond Harris of Tunkhannock.

Harris belongs to a sportsman's club and said making sure guns are stored properly is key.

All firearms sold in gun shops come with locks for safety.

The "Be SMART" campaign stresses securing weapons, modeling responsible behavior, and asking other parents about unsecured guns.

That is something parents Newswatch 16 spoke with plan to do.

"I would be asking them, 'Do you keep your guns locked up and are they loaded when they're not in use?' And just about the basic safety precautions," said Jeff Prescott of Dallas.

Donald Jones was a police officer for 35 years. He is retired and has young grandchildren.

"Two of my children were hunters so we talked about them all the time that you had to use good common sense when you're around firearms or you get hurt or hurt someone else bad or even kill them," said Jones.

"Once a firearm goes off, you can't call the bullet back, so one it fires, you're stuck with the consequences of what happened," said Harris.
