DANVILLE -- A community center in Montour County could generate some money if a cell phone tower is allowed to be built on its property, but not everyone thinks it's a good idea.

The Danville Area Community Center is waiting for the go-ahead from the zoning board for Verizon to build a 150-foot cell tower on their property.

The tower would generate around $15,000 a year for the center. That means in 30 years, the center will have half a million dollars it didn't have before.

"It could do great things for the community center," said Richard Knouse, facility manager. "We're always looking for sources of income. It's very difficult to pay the bills some months here. We have a huge electric bill. We're looking for projects that can provide long term income."

"The way the economy is, it's hard for everybody to survive and the extra money may come in to be beneficial to them to survive for the community," said Jim Packer, a member of the community center.

The proposed tower would go on the north side of the building, which community center leaders say is the perfect spot. That's because when it comes to being an eyesore, it's hard for it to stand out next to the football field lights.

"Most directions you'll be looking at it from, it won't look like anything different from what's already there," Knouse added.

Michael Hardin lives on McCarty Lane, right next to where the tower would go. He said he can't stand the idea of looking at the tower every single day.

"From what I've been reading from realty magazines is that our property value could go down as much as 20 percent," Hardin added.

The Danville Zoning Board had a hearing on the tower Wednesday night. A decision will come within 60 days. That's the last step the community center needs before construction can get underway.
