HARFORD -- A post office in Susquehanna County is in danger of temporarily closing, thanks to a Hollywood actor.

Bronson Pinchot, who became famous for his role as Balki in ABC's "Perfect Strangers," owns several properties in the Harford area, including the local post office.

But now, the post office says it's being told to leave. In a letter to residents in the Harford area, the U.S. Postal Service said that Pinchot is "exercising the option to not renew the lease. " That means postal workers won't be allowed in the building when the lease ends on May 31.

Pinchot recently declared bankruptcy and owes more than $10,000 on homes and buildings in town.

"We don't know if we're actually going to lose the post office, or if they are going to come up with another property to do it," said John Michaels of Harford. "We'll just have to wait and see."

No matter what happens with current building, post office leaders said they want people here in Harford to know that one way or another, they will still get their mail.

"It's going to be uncomfortable probably for a few days, but there will be a continuation of service," said Roger Stonier, the postmaster for New Milford who oversees Harford's operation. "They will get their mail on a daily basis."

There are two primary solutions being discussed for the more than 50 people with P.O. boxes at the Harford post office: taking the P.O. boxes and putting them at Kingsley's post office, which is about four miles away, or expanding rural delivery to all the homes.

"It's definitely an inconvenience, that's for sure," said Jim Gething, who lives right next to the Harford post office. "Either I drive to Kinglsey or I have to spend money putting up my own mailbox."

There will be a meeting for the people in Harford to discuss possibilities for their mail this Monday.

The Harford post office, along with several other properties of Pinchot's, are scheduled to go up for sheriff's sale on July 28.
