JERMYN -- Jennifer Mecca had no words for the cameras as she was led in handcuffs into the police station Friday night.

Investigators say surveillance video shows that on Monday she broke the leg of a child at the Millennium Day Care Center on Madison Avenue.

Mecca allegedly placed Matthew Danylak, age 3, in "time out," then after he reached for a toy car, grabbed his legs and pulled, causing the little boy to fall.

The child was taken to the hospital, underwent surgery, and was put in a cast.

The victim's parents tell Newswatch 16 that they do not want to discuss the case on camera before they have a chance to speak to an attorney.

People in the area of the day care say they are outraged by the case.

Kristale Dooley lives just down the block.

"That day care has been there for a long time. I had my nieces there before, God forbid, what if something like that happened to them?" said Dooley. "If it were my child, even if it is not my child, this girl would be a riot act, I would go right off on her."

Other people said the news made them imagine how they would feel if someone hurt their young relatives.

Dominic Bednash said, "It is terrible, you know, a little kid doesn't know."

Mecca is now charged with a number of criminal counts, including aggravated assault.

According to the Lackawanna County Jail, she is free after posting a portion of her $10,000 bail.

Mecca told police she did not intend to injure the little boy but may have used more force than she intended.

Millennium Day Care Center was closed on Saturday and did not answer the phone or return a message.
