WILKES-BARRE -- Family, friends, and members of the community gathered to pay their respects to a city homicide victim Tuesday night.

Donald Bachman was 49 years old. Police say he was shot multiple times in front of his Willow Street home Friday morning.

Police are reviewing video from a security camera on Bachman's house, trying to identify the killer.

"A man who was trying to do good for his neighborhood and got killed for it, it seems," said neighbor Tom Moore.

Investigators will not say much about a possible motive or whether they have any suspects, only that they are tracking down "active leads."

Bachman was a well-known neighborhood advocate who prided himself on reporting crime to police.

The district attorney worries his death may have scared some into silence.

"I know people are scared. People are frightened to come forward and talk to police anymore, provide tips to police because they believe this is retribution or retaliation for something and I'm here publicly telling people we need to continue working with police," said District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis.

The district attorney said she is organizing a meeting with members of neighborhood crime watch groups and a county detective. She wants people to know the best and safest ways to report crime, things like not confronting people. Police said that is key.

"We're only asking the public to be the eyes and the ears of the police, don't do anything more. Report the crime. They can remain anonymous," said Wilkes-Barre Police Sergeant Phil Myers.
