SCRANTON -- The eyes of a bunch of fourth graders in Scranton really lit up Wednesday as science experiments literally blew up in their faces.
A program meant to spur their interest in science-related careers stopped at McNichol's Plaza, and judging from the kids' reaction, it definitely got their attention.
The fourth graders transformed into scientists at McNichol's Plaza Elementary in Scranton.
First, pouring vinegar into a glove with some baking soda in it. There was some shake, shake, shaking, and then a look of surprise on the faces as science played out in front of them.
"Our motto is, 'If it's not fun, we don't do it.'"
This is a program put on by the group Science Explorers funded by the Sparks Foundation and UGI Utilities.
It's an attempt to get kids interested in science-related careers at an early age.
"Can you imagine? Every day is like Christmas. Every kid is excited. We want them to learn. They get to put their hands on everything. It's wonderful," said Gracene Sirianno of Science Explorers.
And the excitement only grew with experiment number two. All the boys and girls knew was that they were mixing together two liquids. And those two liquids started to grow and grow and grow, as these young scientists grew more and more amazed.
"I thought it was just going to go all over the tray, but instead it kind of made a volcano explosion thing," said fourth grader Arelis Mendez.
The lesson here: science can be interesting at any age.
"I love seeing the excitement on their faces, just the joy it's bringing them right now," said teacher Colleen Carro.
