HONESDALE -- A landmark bakery in Honesdale is closing.

Day's Bakery has been in business since 1952 and customers are stopping by to pick up their favorite items before the store closes next month.

Customers have been coming and going at the bakery on North Main Street for more than 60 years.

Within a month though, the day family will hang up the aprons and stop baking.

"I live here, I live it. I won't know what to eat after it's gone."

At 91, almost 92 years old, owner Doris Day has put the icing on the cake more times than you can count.

"It's been a part of everybody's life forever. It's, I don't know. It's a tough one," she said.

It's also a tough one to swallow for Day's faithful customers through the years. Joan Kyzer of Hawley ordered one last cake before the bakers retire Easter weekend. It's for her grandson's Christening.

"As soon as I heard the news, I started to cry. 30 years of treats for the kids, every holiday dinner graced with delicious rolls, their cakes, their pies," said Kyzer.

"Ever since I was really little, my mom, we'd come to get bread and she'd get me a smiley face cookie, I still come on my own," said Janine Donofry of Honesdale.

Donofry got the news on Facebook first thing in the morning. So did many others who say without Day's, it won't be the same.

"It's a part of Honesdale, it's a part of growing up," added Donofry.

It's where Eddie Day grew up from the age of 5, now baking for an entire community all these years.

"The first job was greasing pans and taking garbage cans," said Day, Doris' son.

But competition from bigger stores and because Day said customers want convenience, not an extra stop, hurt the bakery. Those factors plus their age helped the family decide to close if they can't find a buyer.

"It's the end of an era here, we're hoping somebody will come along and give our customers and enjoy them as much as we have," said Day.

Day's Bakery plans to close April 4th.
