Governor Tom Wolf pitched a severance tax on natural gas drilling Wednesday, a proposal he mentioned during his campaign.
Wolf believes the tax could generate $1 billion a year.
He made his case Wednesday during a visit to an elementary school in Chester County.
Wolf proposes to use a five percent severance tax to help restore school funding that was cut under the previous administration.
"We are the only state with natural resources without a severance tax. With that we could actually do something to close the gap in terms of funding public education, something that would help all of us," Gov. Wolf said.
