SCRANTON — A city in Lackwanna County is millions of dollars in the red, but a deal that could save millions has cleared it’s first hurdle.

Scranton City Council voted in favor of a deal with its Firefighters Union Thursday night that extends through 2021. The deal includes pay increases, and in return, firefighters would contribute more to their pensions.

Both sides believe the deal could save the city between $6,000,000 and $10,000,000 over the course of the contract.

“We all want to see the city do well so that was a motivation from sitting in the negotiations and trying to hammer something out that was palatable for both my membership and for the residents,” said John Judge, President Scranton Firefighters Union.

The deal between the city and the firefighters is similar to the deal that Scranton cut with its police force in January.

The city council must vote again before the deal is approved.
