DANVILLE -- Traffic was backed up at the intersection of Routes 54 and 11 in Danville while crews fixed traffic lights. Since August, the lights at this intersection had become known to drivers as problem lights because they often malfunctioned--sometimes for hours at a time.

"It's been bad. Traffic's always backed up," James Petty said.

This is one of the busiest intersections in Montour County, and when there were problems with the lights, Danville police officers had to direct traffic.

"I feel bad for the guys, the policemen working too because they're standing right in the middle of it and you never know when somebody's not going to be paying attention," Carolynne Mori said.

Borough officials say they tried to fix the problem, but it kept getting worse, so they recently spent $20,000 on a permanent fix. Andrew Towey of Danville says it was nerve-wracking to see the lights blinking either red or yellow.

"Nobody seems to be stopping, especially on the yellow side, which they should be slowing down, which they're not they're just flying through. Someone's going to get nailed," Andrew Towey said.

People who travel through this intersection a lot tell Newswatch 16 they're happy the traffic lights are finally getting fixed.

"It's about time. Something like that shouldn't be let go because it's a busy intersection," Towey said.

"Traffic is always backed up real bad. Cars, always, it's just terrible. Especially when Geisinger leaves out and the school here. It's all congested," Petty said.

Crews started working on the traffic lights at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday and the repair work took about six hours to finish.
