WILKES-BARRE -- People traveling by charter bus and airplane in Luzerne County scrambled to switch their tickets in hopes of leaving a day early to beat the winter storm expected Wednesday.

At the Intermodal Center in Wilkes-Barre, people traveling with Martz Travelways told Newswatch 16 that they were surprised to see so many people leaving early.

“I didn’t think there would be that many today, to be honest with you,” said Patricia Jones. “Tomorrow yes, but today I didn’t think there would be that many. I am concerned about the snow, but I think I’ll beat it today.”

Martz Trailways Ticket Agent Shahrooz Pourmonir said people who want to switch their tickets and travel before or after the storm will not have to pay extra fees.

“They want to get to their family for Thanksgiving holiday, we try to help,” said Pourmonir. “Nobody was expecting this! A lot of people said, ‘I wish it was next week,’ but yeah, it had to be the day before Thanksgiving.”

AAA expects more than 3.5 million people to travel by plane to reach their Thanksgiving destination this year.

At the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, Delta and United are allowing flyers to change their departure date due to the winter weather without being hit with extra fees.
