SHENANDOAH -- A community is on edge after four fires overnight in Schuylkill County.

Officials said the fires at four vacant homes are being considered suspicious and people we spoke with in Shenandoah are worried there could be more fires.

First, flames hit a building on East Lloyd Street in Shenandoah shortly after midnight Sunday.

Less than an hour later another place on North Ferguson Street caught fire.

Then a vacant home on Centre Street went up in flames a short time later.

Finally a fourth fire hit a building around 5 a.m. on South Ferguson Street.

Now neighbors are worried all four are a sure sign there's a fire bug on the loose.

“It scared me. There’s a lot of abandoned buildings in this town and a lot of abandoned buildings around where I live and it scares you,” said Chrissy Price of Shenandoah.

“Don’t know who’s doing it, but I know there’s a fire bug in town here, but we don’t know who,” said James Whalen of Shenandoah.

Fire crews were kept busy overnight with the four fires, each one at a vacant home.

A state police fire marshal is investigating, but the damage has already been done in these neighborhoods as the flames affected neighboring buildings.

“I’d say about a dozen and a half firemen just trying to set up and get ready to take it down. Eventually they pulled up the ladder truck, trying to attack it from the top and from the front and sides,” said Kurtiss Mckee of Shenandoah.

Emergency officials said fire crews are exhausted after the early morning string of fires.

If the fires turn out to be arson, people around Shenandoah hope whoever is behind them is caught before someone gets hurt.

“We need the firefighters around, especially with the four of them in one night. That is very, very scary,” Price said.

The fire chief said no one was hurt in any of the fires.

Shenandoah police are also involved in the investigation.

Anyone who sees any suspicious activity should call 911.
