LEHIGHTON -- A former teacher in Carbon County is accused of sending inappropriate text messages to a 16-year-old boy over the summer.

State police said Matthew Fisher, 32, was a teacher in the Lehighton Area School District when those texts were sent.

They said that boy is a student in the district.

Investigators said Fisher became friends with the boy during the last week of July and sent several sexual texts over the next several days.

Fellow students were surprised hearing the news.

“He doesn't look like the kind of guy that would do that kind of thing. He doesn't give off that kind of personality. He always seemed kind of laid back when you saw him in the hallway,” said senior Matt Shanton.

When police interviewed Fisher they said he admitted to sending those texts and was charged with corruption of minors.

“It is a personnel matter and we're not allowed to comment on those issues and I can tell you that it is no longer an employee of the district,” said Lehighton Area School District Superintendent Jonathan Cleaver.

Police said Fisher lives at a home just outside Lehighton, where a for sale sign is posted.

Neighbor Rose Kelly said she didn't know Fisher too well.

“It was usually just, 'Oh, hi, how's it going?' He really just kept to himself, never really talked to many people. I've seen him three or four times total in four years of living here,” said Kelly.

Still it's upsetting for her knowing the accusations he faces.

“Being that I have little kids, it's kind of creepy.”

Matthew Fisher has a preliminary hearing scheduled for October 8 in Carbon County.
