MOUNT CARMEL TOWNSHIP -- Firefighters from two counties battled huge flames at an old Catholic school in Northumberland County.

Responders said the fire sparked just before 11 p.m. Tuesday in the Marion Heights area of Mount Carmel Township.

Crews from both Northumberland County and Schuylkill County were called in to help.

Neighbors told Newswatch 16 the fire was so intense they were worried it would spread to homes nearby.

Firefighters said the old school is intact, but the gym was destroyed.

According to authorities, the building has been vacant for more than 25 years.

People who live nearby said the fire seems suspicious.

A fire marshal says there is too much damage to determine the cause of the fire but no utilities were connected.
