MOCANAQUA -- A fire in one part of Luzerne County tore through a home Thursday and left one woman dead.
It broke out around 11 a.m. Thursday on Main Street in Mocanaqua.
Flames tore through the second story of the building.
Officials say 52-year-old Michelle Dzoch, died in the home.
Neighbors from all over Mocanaqua looked on as fire crews fought to put out the flames.
Firefighters were not able to save one of the women inside.
"She (Dzoch) was a great person. She always was cheerful and wanted to socialize with everybody," said Erica Kubasek.
Kubasek says she went to school with the Dzoch's daughters. She says the victim was a member of the Polish Falcons club and a sporting club in Mocanaqua.
"It's upsetting. It's very upsetting. You hate to see somebody lose their life that way. It's heartbreaking."
It was also heartbreaking for Dustin Ulichney of Shickshinny who arrived at the house shortly after the fire started. He says he rushed to the home after realizing he knew the family that lives there.
He says Dzoch lived there with her daughter and two grandchildren.
At first they all made it out safely, but Ulichney said Dzoch went back into the burning home.
"The daughter said that the mom went back in to put the fire out, so I proceeded to go in the front door to see if I could make my way in to see if I could get her out," Ulichney said.
But he said there was too much smoke and he couldn't make it through the home to save her.
"She was a very, very loving lady, very nice. The whole family's nice. They're easy to get along with, certainly would do anything for you. It's just a shame."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
