HAZLETON --Mother Nature's latest curveball kept snow out of the Hazleton area on Monday ... so for kids here that meant no snow day.

"I was absolutely thrilled that we were able to dodge this particular storm," Dr. Francis X. Antonelli, Hazleton Area School District superintendent said.

Antonelli said this wacky winter has left the district with seven snow days.

As of now school wouldn't be over until June 20th.

The district does have plans so school can wrap up as originally scheduled on June 11th, the same day as graduation.

"We're filing Act 80 exemption with the state which are professional development days. We are hoping the state approves that as instructional snow makeup days," Antonelli said.

Along with those five days the district is also petitioning to have seniors come in on three Saturday mornings.

These Saturday mornings would allow seniors to practice for graduation.

These days would also count as snow make up days.

Officials say with this plan at the very least, seniors would not end up in school until the end of June.

Some students Newswatch 16 talked to say, they're okay with the districts plan.

"We want it to be done and over with so we have a summer together. A lot of people start school in July, some in August and start the early education or sports. So I think it's a good idea and everyone loves it," senior class president, Dante Chirico said.

Some parents of high school seniors are also on board with the district's plans.

They say it will be best to keep graduation on schedule.

"When you have cousins and other relatives graduating at that time, it's nice to keep it on the calendar and not move it around," Lynda Habel said.

School officials say they are confident that their plan to keep graduation on June 11th will stay on schedule.

Officials say their plan would allow for a "cushion" day in the event there is another snow day.

In the meantime the district has to wait for written confirmation from the Department of Education.
