GETTYSBURG -- Federal investigators now believe a plane that crashed near Gettysburg in late December broke apart in the air.

The small plane took off from the airport in Bloomsburg the day after Christmas carrying a pilot and a junior at southern Columbia high school.  Both were killed in the wreck.

The NTSB said Miranda Rose, a student in the Southern Columbia School District, was with her mother's boyfriend on their way to South Carolina when the crash happened.

The engine and propellers of that Piper airplane will be examined by investigators at a later date in hopes of finding answers to why the plane broke apart midair.
