More people may be calling in sick in Luzerne County.

Numbers from the Pennsylvania Department of Health show that the county has had more than 160 reported flu cases since October.

"Up until a week and a half ago we didn`t really see much of anything, but then the flu cases started arriving, and they`ve definitely been increasing over the past week. So, the flu is definitely in our area," said Dr. Louis O'Boyle of Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

The flu is a virus which means it can`t be treated with an antibiotic. However, doctors say there are still remedies. But for those who leave the systems untreated, you can end up at the hospital with severe symptoms.

"I get to see the bad side of it, and unfortunately we have seen some serious cases of the flu already with some complications," said Dr. O'Boyle.

Schools can be breeding grounds for the flu virus, but a nurse at Dallas High School said, for now, students are complaining of a different kind of bug.

"I`m seeing a fair amount of stomach upset, vomiting, stomach aches and diarrhea," said Laura O'Malley, a certified nurse.

Dr. O'Boyle said it takes about two weeks for the flu vaccine to get in your system.

Those who already have their flu shots, don't need to worry too much.

However, if you're experiencing symptoms and are on the fence about heading to work or school, experts say to just stay home.

"Seriously, if you`re ill and running a fever you need to stay home," said O'Malley.

The school nurse said the low number of flu-infected students may be due to holiday vacation and recent snow days, but she's knocking on wood and hoping this is as bad as it gets.
