There's a new neighbor in downtown Nanticoke and it has a lot of people talking.
After a year long construction project, the Geisinger-Nanticoke facility is open for business, and patients are already stopping by.
"It's the best thing that could happen. I have to go up to Kingston to get blood tests. Now I can go here to Nanticoke," Normal Duzinski of Nanticoke said.
The nearly $4 million primary care facility will treat kids and adults with chronic illnesses or those looking for routine checkups or regular health screenings.
"There was a lot of patients looking for a physician in their community. A practice in their community for their primary care medical needs and we're here to serve that role," Dr. Susan Werner said.
People Newswatch 16 talked to say it's exciting to have a new facility like Geisinger in town.
They're hoping that by having Geisinger close-by that maybe more people and businesses will move to Nanticoke.
"I think this is going to be a great addition to our downtown revitalization. We're going to get a lot of foot traffic and that encourages more businesses downtown," Pamela Heard, Nanticoke city manager said.
Al Mondello who drives to Nanticoke from Plains hopes the new facility cleans up the city.
"It's kind of a depressed area. There is a lot of old neighborhoods. A lot of drugs, a lot of crime and this can only help," Mondello said.
The new facility has 18 exam rooms, one laboratory and 13 employees.
Doctors say its been a busy few weeks and they're still growing.
"We have a new physician here as well joining our practice. He's not new to the community, he's been here for 17 years, Dr. Jon Olenginski. He just joined our practice so we're busy and loving it," Werner said.
The Geisinger-Nanticoke facility is open Monday through Friday.
