SALEM TOWNSHIP -- It is a tradition that drew hundreds to the Berwick Area High School cafeteria Wednesday night.

The annual Senior Citizens Thanksgiving dinner is a free dinner that had folks standing in line hours before the doors opened.

"The food is great, and it’s wonderful that they’re doing this for the senior citizens," said Floyd Mood of Berwick.

“You get to meet a lot of friends that you don’t usually see through the years, and you get to sit with family and have a good time," said Cheryl Maier of Nescopeck.

Eight years ago when this all started, teachers and school staffers were in charge, but now it is mostly student-run.

They raise most of the money to pay for the food, they make that food and they serve it.

"Our teachers used to do all of the serving and the cleanup and the preparing of the meal, as well as our cafeteria ladies, and our kids kind of wanted to adopt it," said Melissa Driscole of the Berwick Area School District.

The students said the event is about giving thanks for what they have and what they can give to others.

"Seeing all the people come out from the community, talking to them, greeting them, saying ‘Hi, how are you?’ that’s awesome to me," said Berwick Area senior Ty Morzilla.

The leftovers from the Thanksgiving feast are being donated to charities in the Berwick area.
