SCRANTON -- Catholic churches in our area and across the country are trying to collect money for the typhoon victims in the Philippines.

Newswatch 16 stopped by Saint Peter's Cathedral in Scranton Sunday morning, where a special collection was taken to aid the recovery effort.

Bishop Joseph Bambera said though the devastation is halfway around the world, the effects are being felt right here in our area.

"We have a large Filipino and Vietnamese community within the diocese of Scranton and many of our brothers and sisters locally are hurting because their loved ones are burdened, some of their loves ones are lost," said Bishop Bambera.

The dioceses said donations will be given to Catholic relief services.
