JIM THORPE - State police in Carbon County said a deputy sheriff died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday night.

According to the Lehigh County Coroner, it was David Midas, 33, of Weatherly.

Authorities said the incident happened on Broadway in Jim Thorpe around 8:20 p.m.

The Lansford Police Chief told Newswatch 16 that an off-duty officer and an on-duty officer were involved in the incident, Midas being one of them.

Troopers said that there are no suspicious circumstances and the death has been ruled a suicide.

The street was blocked off for hours, during the busy fall weekend in Jim Thorpe.

On Saturday in Lansford, residents told Newswatch 16 that both Midas, and the other officer involved Chris Ondrus, were popular in the community and well-respected.

Michael Erdock met Officer Midas during a visit to the Lansford station house.

"Oh he was nice, he was very pleasant, actually he was known to be a very diplomatic person, he had a very nice nature," Erdock said.

There is more to this story then they are saying especially since office Shuback was involved!! And he was the one molesting the child in Landsford!! I don’t think he took his own life something else had happened.

  • Stephen Koller SR

Officer Midas was a well known guy he was always getting involed with the kids safety and always helping people, I just can”t get why he would do something like this. I don”t think that he would take his own life but that is why the Investigation is still going on someday we will know the truth on what really happen that night. R.I.P Officer Midas my thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I knew officer Midas and one thing is certain, he would not have committed suicide. The coroner is just looking for the easiest answer.

Amber you are right, they are looking for an easy way out and a cover up. Officer Midas would have never taken his own life. Look at the people involved enough said right there!!

You are the third person I heard stating that they witnessed this and that it happened about an hour earlier than news reports. What I want to know is WHY they are reporting a false time?!?!?

He may have been trying to disarm his frend and had no idea what was about to take place untill it was too late. wait till the investigation is complete.

The first investigation will be as to why a police station’s security camera’s were not operational at the time of event. The Mayor and Police Chief will have some explaining to do with the FBI shortly.
Seems to me the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition Program was not effective for this individual.

I know depression comes in all faces but something doesnt sound right. No trouble at work,no trouble out of work. I hate to see this labeled wrong then taking time to find out every detail. I feel bad for the children who are victims just as much.

Something doesn’t sound right to me. they had a scuffle first? Does’t sound like a typical suicide case to me.

  • Michael Solris

I seen it happen actual time was 7: 40pm. I just call a friend to say I was going to be late. Something is going on a police car has the road blocked. I heard the gun shot and seen some body fall to the ground.
