Family, friends and law enforcement turned out Tuesday in Schuylkill County for the funeral of a longtime police officer who passed away. The tribute was for a Pine Grove officer who dedicated 40 years of his life to protecting and serving the public.
Police stood at attention and saluted one of their own. They were paying their last respects to Frank D'Agostino, 78, of Pine Grove.
Family member Joann Wenrich said she is proud her uncle served as a police officer for 40 years. Wenrich remembers the good times.
"Him being on the police force, checking the meters, whistling all the time, "Wenrich said.
D'Agostino's niece, Darlene Felty said there was sadness, too.
"It was my uncle, my mom's brother, and he one of the last ones out of the family."
Police departments from Schuylkill and Berks Counties turned out for their fellow officer. Pine Grove's main drag was shut down for a time, because of the large funeral procession.
Pine Grove Police Chief Tom Trotter said it was a sad day.
"He was a great officer that was his life, he certainly loved Pine Grove."
Tremont police officer Greg Pigar remembers Frank D'Agostino as a teacher to young officers just learning the ropes.
"Frank was always here. He was the go-to guy. He was here as I grew up in Pine Grove. Frank was always the face of the police department, as faces would change, Frank was always here."
It was Frank D'Agostino's last patrol in Pine Grove. He was honored as the hearse drove under a huge American flag set up over the community he loved.
