SALEM TOWNSHIP -- A new cross has been placed at a memorial site for a newborn baby murdered in Wayne County. The cross appeared the day after a Newswatch 16 story about the disappearance of a cross that had been at the site for two years.

The memorial site is along Route 590 in Salem Township, near Hamlin.

A cross was placed there In May 2011, after Christopher Fitzpatrick used a cinder block to murder his newborn daughter, Jacklyn Barrise. The infant's body was found in those woods.

Fitzpatrick is serving a life sentence for the crime. The baby's mother, Jennifer Barrise, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and was sentenced to up to 14 years in state prison.

On Thursday, Newswatch 16 reported that the cross had disappeared from the memorial site. The owner of the property and the current renter both denied taking it.

On Friday, Newswatch 16 learned that a new cross had been placed at the site. It's not known who put it there.
