Mother Sentenced To Jail Time For Alleged Shooting Cover-up

WILKES-BARRE – A Luzerne County judge opted for time behind bars, instead of house arrest, for a woman accused of trying to cover-up an accidental shooting last April.

Angelina Deabreu was sentenced to six to 12 months in Luzerne County Jail, followed by a year of probation.

Deabreu’s trial ended abruptly back in May, when she pleaded guilty to charges of tampering with evidence and hindering an investigation.

Prosecutors said Wilkes-Barre Police were called to Hill Street last April for reports of a teenager hit in a drive-by shooting.

Detectives later determined that Tyler Winstead had accidentally been shot and killed by his friend Elijah Yussuf, and that Deabreu tried to cover it up.

Defense attorneys for Deabreu told Newswatch 16 the she has taken responsibility for misjudgment, but she should not have been separated from her infant son.

“My client was not involved in moving any body, but none the less, the judge was sending a message to the community, and I think he did so rather forcefully,” said Tom Marsilio.

“The media and the sensationalism behind the death of Tyler Winstead drove some of this,” said Larry Kansky.

Luzerne County District Attorney said the circumstances surrounding the case against Deabreu warranted jail time.

“To conceal a weapon, destroy evidence, destroy DNA evidence, lie to police, deleting photographs that contain incriminating evidence; all of the combined, we felt that she deserved something more than probation,” said Stefanie Salavantis.
