SCRANTON -- Dozens of American flags were retired Saturday during a special ceremony in Scranton.

Boy Scout Troop 34 assisted Marines with disposing of the flags at the Marine Corps League on Alder Street.

The scouts helped pile up the flags, which were then burned.

Participants say taking part in a ceremony such as this is an honor.

"It shows that we have respect for our country," said Leo Sebastianelli of the troop. "It shows that we also come out and we help these Marines that they wouldn't be able to do this by themselves, so we come out and show our citizenship in a way that helps everyone."

After the flags are burned, the ashes are buried.

The grommets of the flags are also retired and presented to the scouts as a token of their efforts.
