SCRANTON---For the first time in more than a decade, there will be a new mayor in Scranton after this election season.

Two Republicans and four Democrats are vying for the job.

There are three seats up for grabs on Scranton city council, too.

W"e have to move forward with young people, no matter what, you know? And I think that some of the candidates now have visions," said Allan Kearney of Scranton who said he will be voting this primary.

This primary election comes after a tumultuous year in the city.

In 2012, Scranton made national headlines as a city on the verge of financial collapse.

The city council and mayor were at odds over a financial recovery plan.

City leaders eventually agreed on more than a 20 percent property tax hike.

Voter turnout at primary elections is usually fairly low, but after the past year, voters Newswatch 16 spoke with said everyone who can should get out to the polls.

"I the city has gone downhill and we need to get out city back together so people can have jobs, like fix our city streets, get our kids better education," said Nicole Searfoss of the city.

"People are out here struggling for work, everything, lot of homeless people running around here," said Larry Wright of Scranton.

"You know they're supposed to be helping people out here, instead they're raising the taxes, making it a lot harder, I think the crime is going to go up, just all around they just need to start cleaning up," said Korey Wronski.

"We've got to do it together because I'm feeling a lot of separation, but we can't live in the past, we have to live in the future," added Kearney.
