PLAINS TOWNSHIP -- The casino license for Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs is up for renewal.

At a recent hearing before members of the state Gaming Control Board, people praised the facility in Luzerne County for all it offers and for giving back to the local community.

"We've been met with welcoming arms from the day we arrived, and we're just very fortunate to be a small part of this community," said Michael Bean, Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs President.

At that hearing, no one spoke out against the casino.

People who visit the casino said they hope the license is renewed.

"Well, it's convenient, it's close, and it's like one of the places you can go in town, that's open 24 hours a day," said Robert Johns of Scranton.

"We need something for around here. We've got nothing now. All the businesses are going out of town, out of state," said Leslie Decker of Dunmore.

In addition to the slots and table games inside the casino, there are restaurants and shops.

A $50 million hotel and convention center is being built next to the casino.

About three to four million people visit the casino a year, about 12,000 a day.

According to casino officials, crime is low too.

Those are all reasons casino officials feel confident and hopeful about renewal.

"We feel good about it and we hope that the board feels equally as well as we do," said Bean.

The full state Gaming Control Board is scheduled to vote on the license renewal in the next few months.
