SCRANTON -- The Mellow Theater at Lackawanna College is being renamed, according to college officials.

The theater was named for disgraced former state senator Bob Mellow who is currently in federal prison serving time after pleading guilty to corruption.

The college's board of trustees voted earlier this week to remove Mellow's name from the campus theater, and according to a college spokesperson, delayed the announcement until Thursday morning.

Lackawanna trustees authorized the action with a one sentence statement:

"The Board of Trustees of Lackawanna College met in April, 2013 and, after thoughtful consideration, decided to name its theater the Theater at Lackawanna College."

Mellow is currently an inmate at a federal prison camp in South Carolina, serving time on public corruption charges.

The move to strip the name of the disgraced former state senator from Peckville from the theater comes a month after Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane connected Mellow with what she called a pay to play scheme involving alleged kickbacks for contracts with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.

Mellow has not been formally arraigned on those charges.

Lackawanna College trustees' action comes after Blakely borough officials voted last month to remove the former state senator's name from the park that was called the Senator Bob Mellow Recreation Complex.
