Fresh Snow for Winter’s Last Ride

MIDDLE SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP -- It's a feeling Evelyn Rogers of Brooklyn waited all winter for, careening down the hill at Ferwood's Winter Fun Center

In just two weeks, the tubing facility will actually become part of the first hole of the resort's golf course, symbolizing the shift in seasons.

So with winter waning, sliders squeezed in a few last runs on Sunday afternoon, the last day of Fernwood's tubing season.

Evelyn Rogers came all the way from Brooklyn with friends and family members.

"It's the last day, and I was like I have to do this before winter is over," said Rogers.

Like skiing, tubing is a seasonal business with plenty of ups and downs, depending on the weather.

This season's cold conditions allowed workers to make so much snow, they actually had to stop when they ran out of space.

A contrast to 2011-2012's "meltdown" season when warm weather left winter recreation facilities hurting.

"It was not a good winter at all," said Greg Huffman, General Manager of Fernwood Resort. He added that due to the year's deep base of snow created by a cold snap, the facility was able to extend the season by about three weeks. While he said that this year will not make up for the business lost last year, he calls 2013 "above average."

This weekend's snowfall was icing on the cake, allowing for a sweet St. Patrick's Day finish.
