POTTSVILLE -- It took a jury just an hour and a half to find a 19-year-old man guilty of first degree murder in Schuylkill County.

The man was on trial, accused of killing a former neighbor in Mahanoy City.

It was an emotional day in Schuylkill County court for the family of the man from Mahanoy City on trial for murder.

They broke down in tears as soon as they heard the jury found Jarvin Huggins guilty of first degree murder and several other charges.

The jury found Huggins guilty of beating his neighbor Gene Slavinsky to death with a window weight in Slavinsky's home last year.

Police say it was over money and a computer.

Huggins had confessed to police that he lured Slavinsky downstairs and that he couldn't stop himself from beating him.

In closing arguments, Huggins' attorney said that Huggins was receiving disability insurance for brain damage.

He also said he gave his confession without a lawyer present and argued there wasn't enough physical evidence to convict him.

The district attorney said Slavinsky's DNA was found on Huggins’ clothes.

She also thanked the victim's neighbors who she says got the case moving.

"The neighbors of Mr. Slavinsky (were) watching out for each other,” said D.A. Karen Byrnes-Noon.

Huggins faces a mandatory life sentence for the first degree murder charge.

He's also convicted of robbery, burglary and several other charges.

His attorney and family had no comment.

Huggins will be sentenced next month.
