SOUTH CANAAN TOWNSHIP -- Slippery roads are being blamed for an early morning crash in Wayne County that shut down a road, left hundreds without power, and forced two school districts to cancel classes.

It happened around 3 a.m. Wednesday along Route 296 near Waymart.

Authorities say an SUV vehicle lost control and slammed into a utility pole, knocking out power to nearly 1,300 homes and businesses. Electricity was restored by about 10:30 a.m.

The crash also forced Western Wayne school district and Canaan Christian Academy to call off classes.

District officials tell us there was no power at the schools in Wayne County, and buses could not get in.

Route 296 reopened around 11:30 a.m.
