KINGSTON – State environmental officials said hundreds of gallons of midgrade gasoline is unaccounted for and likely leaked from two storage tanks at a gas station in Luzerne County.

A Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman told Newswatch 16 that 500 to 1,700 gallons of fuel is suspected of leaking and likely contaminating groundwater underneath the Convenient Mart at the intersection of Wyoming Avenue and Pringle Street in Kingston.

According to the D.E.P., the gas station owner noticed that there was an issue after a recent fuel delivery.

Sarah Phillips lives near the gas station said she is worried about the possibility of contaminated ground water.

"I know that there's work down there some times going on but I wasn't aware of a gas leak. That definitely concerns me,” said Phillips.

A D.E.P. spokesperson said the fuel leak has not reached any streams or public water sources.
