WILKES-BARRE – Family members told Newswatch 16 that longtime city councilman and standout radio correspondent Jim McCarthy died on Monday.

According to Harry and Justin McCarthy, their father died following complications from heart problems and other health issues.

The 77-year-old Diamond City native quickly rose through the ranks as a local radio DJ and eventually worked as a White House correspondent for CBS radio news.

The McCarthy’s said their father surprised the entire family when his career in Washington D.C. ended and he decided to pursue politics in his hometown.

Wilkes-Barre city council members honored McCarthy with a moment of silence before a regularly-scheduled meeting Tuesday night.
