Homes, Sweet Homes in Williamsport

WILLIAMSPORT -- What if some landmarks in your hometown were made of chocolate?

In Williamsport, college students are putting the finishing touches on chocolate homes; mini versions of things like hotels and churches in Billtown.

Penn College students have worked three weeks building masterpieces from scratch. No wood, no nails. Just pure, sweet chocolate.

"It takes a lot of hard work, and architectural skills you wouldn't think you'd need in baking and pastry majors," said student Megan Spencer.

Spencer and her classmates have gone through the painstaking process of making their chocolate homes look like landmarks in Williamsport. There is the Genetti Hotel and the chocolate Genetti.

The Thomas Taber museum and the Taber Museum, a la Cocoa.

Spencer's choco-church looks like a certain house of worship on West Fourth Street.

"I am putting royal icing on the ground to make it look like snow around Trinity Church," she said.

Not only is it a lesson in how to build tiny replicas out of chocolate, but the students are also getting a lesson in giving back to their community. All proceeds from an auction Friday will go towards building homes built by Habitat for Humanity.

"We want them to be more than just bakers and chefs. We want them to have a sense of community and to belong and help out," said Chef Suzann Major of Penn College.

Krista Fields' scrumptious home is a "Habitat" home. She considers it worth the effort to help out and delight some taste buds along the way.

"Butterscotch and white chocolate, it'll taste good!" said Fields.
