HILLSGROVE TOWNSHIP -- A historic covered bridge in Sullivan County is back to its old self after last year's historic flood caused lots of damage.

The Hillsgrove Covered Bridge looks pretty much the way it was meant to look with its vibrant red siding and the circa 1900 architecture.

For the better part of the last year it was closed due to heavy damage.

Flooding from Tropical Storm Lee wrecked the historic bridge, one of three covered bridges in Sullivan County.

Then last month, crews got to work making repairs in order to make the bridge whole again.

"It's really interesting work, we don't do many of them. We take pride in it, and try to do the best we can to make it look original," said Nick Perry of Perry Construction in Dunmore.

With a snip of the ribbon, county officials, engineers, and work crews reopened the bridge to traffic. For county commissioner Wylie Morton, it is not just any bridge.

"Twenty-five years ago today I was married in the center of that bridge and so it's really great we get to reopen it," said Morton.

Morton said the bridge where he and his bride tied the knot is stronger than it was before. Mrs. Morton could not make it for the ribbon cutting but the two might return to mark their silver anniversary.

"We may well take a drive through tonight, we get to the middle of the bridge and recreate a kiss every once in a while," said Morton.

Federal disaster money is paying for the bridge repairs, said Sullivan County officials.

Another covered bridge in Sonestown, damaged in that same flood, should be repaired in the next year or so.
