BEAVER MEADOWS -- A lot of city, borough and township governments are struggling with finances.

Now, some of them in the Hazleton area are getting a helping hand through a church. It's an effort to help the cash strapped communities.

Scraping on metal, and then painting playground equipment in Beaver Meadows. That`s the mission of the Hazleton Community Church.

Julianne Nerger's husband is the pastor of the church.

"Hazleton Community Church really lives up to their name by giving back to the community through different outreach projects," Nerger said.

Volunteer Barbara Fowler said she likes to help others.

"I am not a neat painter but I'm a painter. If you don't put me down to detail I can paint so I think I'll be OK," she said.

But Beaver Meadows Mayor Bill Hines said there is a serious note to the painting the borough's playground.

"It's awesome that they're going to extend a hand because we can't afford to paint the equipment. Money is tight especially this year the way things are," said Hines.

Volunteer Linda Smoak said she came from North Carolina to help those from the Hazleton Community Church.

"I think it's a wonderful thing, we need to serve the Lord in any way we can," said Smoak.

The Hazleton Community Church is continuing and expanding its outreach to local governments. For example they're talking with officials in Hazleton about cleaning the inside of city hall.
