STROUDBURG -- West Nile Virus can be a serious and even deadly illness.

It is an illness Michael Pula of Monroe County thinks he may have after was bitten by mosquitoes about two weeks ago.

"I've had pretty much a constant headache every minute of the day for going on seven days and it's just getting better now, sore throat, just general fatigue," said Pula.

Michael Pula works for Monroe County Vector Control. He sets mosquito traps and sprays for them when necessary.

Already, has found insects that tested positive for carrying West Nile.

"I think we're up to 66, 67, so that's double the highest we've ever had."

West Nile Virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.

Symptoms can include:

  • high fever
  • headache
  • neck stiffness
  • numbness
  • skin rash

If you suspect you may have the virus, see your doctor right away.

"They'll treat your symptoms but there really is no cure. It's a virus, so there's no treatment for it," said Pula.

Pula said the best thing to do is prevent mosquito bites by wearing long pants and shirts and using bug spray with DEET.
