MAHANOY CITY -- Investigators are still looking for the cause of a massive fire in Mahanoy City.

While that's happening, demolition is underway. Heavy machinery was brought in to tear down seven fire-damaged buildings in Mahanoy City.

The blaze on Main Street lit up the sky early Monday morning.  All the row homes were vacant.

Police are still looking for the cause of the fire.

Bob and Ellen Herbert sat on the front porch of the home firefighters were able to save by showering it with water.  The Herberts want to publicly thank the first responders.

"When we came out, we saw 30-foot flames. It was unbelievable! We were in our pajamas, we couldn't grab anything and these men never gave up. They saved my home they doused it with water," Ellen Herbert said.

Larry Levy took video of the demolition. Levy said he remembers when he lived there in the 1980's.

"Memories are flashing back when we were kids, my sisters and brother playing in the back yard. It was a good time. Memories of your childhood don't go away and there were some good ones spent here."

The stretch of empty buildings was an eyesore for years. The demolition brought out some spectators. Bob Loftus explains he's glad to see the buildings go.

"It's been a hazard for years. It was ready to collapse for eight years already," said Loftus.

According to the demolition contractor, all of the buildings should be down by the end of the week.
