HAWLEY - Get ready to ride. Some brand new bicycles in Wayne County don't cost users a penny. You can find the bikes at several locations in Hawley, including the Delaware Highlands Conservancy.
"People can come in and check out the bike for the day just like you would check out a library book. There's no cost to do that and you can take it and use it for whatever you would like," said Sue Currier of the Downtown Hawley Partnership.
The Downtown Business Association in Hawley bought twelve new bikes as a way to give back to the community, but they're also a way to get visitors and residents to re-discover the downtown.
"I think it's a fantastic idea for everybody. From out of the area, they could ride through town, instead of walking they get to see every shop as they ride through town. It`s a great idea," said James Downey, owner of Trish's Bagels.
Maine Barletta of Hawley believes the program may get him downtown more often.
"I've lived here for twelve years, and I still haven't stepped my foot into all of these stores down the strip here, still just a good thing to get the kids out and moving," said Barletta.
This bike share program isn't just a great way to see downtown Hawley, it`s also a great way to save the environment.
"When you look at bike share programs that are in New York City, Washington D.C., all of those other places, they've been put in place to really help people go green, to think about other options than jumping in their car for a small trip. We're really hoping that`s what people do with this as well," said Currier.
Using less gas to get around, and pedaling to destinations in Hawley could help keep the downtown air a little cleaner. Something life long resident Frank Sampson said is perfect for his town.
"Oh yeah, it`s small, easy to get to on a bike, it`d be very nice," said Sampson.
So the next time you're in Hawley, you may want to park your four wheels and try out two instead.
