Two men are now charged with homicide, kidnapping and assault for the death of a man found tied to a tree in Schuylkill County.
Troopers said Keith Reber, 48 of Schuylkill Haven and Daniel Dull, 25, of Orwigsburg took Smith to a wooded area behind Reber's home and tied Smith to the tree. The two men told investigators when they went back to check on Smith early Tuesday morning he was dead. They went to state police at that time to report what happened.
The coroner wants to know if he died from exposure.
One neighbor said she heard some voices in the woods before the body was found.
"When I went up to the newspaper yesterday morning I heard them talking up on top of the hill. I didn't know what was going on, I just heard them talking," said neighbor Sue Eidem.
State police searched a garage near the spot where Smith was found.
"I always felt that this property was a little bit weird, I guess is the term I would use. I could never identify with the people who live here. They don't fit into this community like the rest of us do here," said neighbor Carl Swartzentruber.
Other neighbors can't believe someone was killed in their community.
"I gulped. It was horrible and I live two miles from here and it's pretty frightening actually," said neighbor Gene Mclain.
"I am glad to know the investigation was thorough and quick and there is some idea as to what happened and why and that's good because it would be frightening to have a killer loose in the community," Swartzentruber added.
State police are still trying to figure out exactly what led up to the death of Bryan Smith.
