A Sunday morning car crash in Lackawanna County left a woman dead and a man in the hospital.

State police said the car crash happened around 3 a.m. on Interstate 81 near the Scott Township exit. Traffic was shut down in the northbound lanes for four hours until crews could clear the wreckage.

Authorities said Jason Wood, of Scranton, and passenger Jeri Todd, 28, of Scranton, were traveling northbound when their vehicle began to slide into the left lane where it collided into a tanker truck.

The impact threw both Wood and Todd from the vehicle. Wood was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. Todd was killed.

Troopers said neither were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The truck driver, who was belted, was not injured.

State police are investigating the cause of the crash.
