State police in Northumberland County were back on the scene of a homicide Monday.

At first, troopers said it appeared there was a break-in at the home near Milton which led to the shooting.

State police are no longer looking for an intruder in the shooting death of Patricia Thomas, they said.

That raises questions over where the investigation stands now after troopers initially said someone was in the Thomas home early Saturday, when she was killed and her husband, Robert, was hit in the head.

A state police forensic van sat parked outside the Thomas home along Phillips Road east of Milton. Investigators said Patricia Thomas was shot and killed here early Saturday.

At first, it appeared someone broke in and Thomas' husband Robert went for a gun. He was hit in the head while Patricia Thomas was shot once and died.

Monday, investigators spent time with Robert Thomas inside his home before they exited together. A closer look did show a small wound on Thomas' forehead.

Investigators received numerous calls from concerned residents in the area, fearful there might be somebody dangerous out there, but they said the public does not have to fear for their safety.

"There was a lot of concern, you don't have that kind of activity in this area, it's a little disheartening til you sit back and think about it," said neighbor Sam Whistler.

Whistler came to the conclusion the initial story of a potential burglar was not adding up.

"It didn't make sense, that part of the road there are 7-8 houses in the area," said Whistler.

Soon, others who lived nearby grew less and less concerned there could be a killer on the loose.

"It sounded a little fishy and stuff, why if you're going to kill somebody in a house, why only one person was killed not both?" questioned Sandra Williamson.

State police are not releasing any more information, claiming they do not want to jeopardize the investigation.

No one is in custody, said troopers.

An autopsy was done Monday and the Northumberland County Coroner said Patricia Thomas died from a single gunshot wound and her death is in fact a homicide.
