A crash Friday morning in Luzerne County left one person dead.

The crash happened around 7 a.m. on Old Route 115 in Lehman Township, not far from Dallas.

Police said Ronald Barto, 73, of Muncy was killed when he lost control of his pick-up truck on an icy section of the road, and hit a tree.

Old Route 115 in Lehman Township was closed for a while between the Huntsville Golf Club and Church Road.

After the crash police say Luzerne County road crews spread sand and gravel on the road when water run off froze on the pavement.

Police also say several times this winter they've called the county road and bridge department to salt this stretch of road because of icy conditions.

"We have had multiple calls, people passing through asking us is there something you guys can do about it? And the only power we have is we call County road and bridge and they come out and salt it," said officer Christy Elias of the Lehman Township Police Department.

Luzerne County engineer Joe Gibbons says this is the first he`s heard of a potential problem with water on the roadway in that section of Lehman Township.  He says the county will do a full investigation and take any steps needed to prevent that from happening in the future.

Students at Penn State Wilkes-Barre who drive on that section of road say it can get dicey.

"It is a very sharp turn and I drive just a car and I have all wheel drive and sometimes it can get icy and I worry I`m going to fishtail and just spin off," said student Marissa Nicoletti of Plains Township.

Police say Barto was not wearing his seatbelt, but it is unlikely it would have saved his life because of the way his truck hit the tree.
