The former executive director of NEIU 19 was in federal court Wednesday to face charges of fraud, theft and money laundering.

Doctor Fred Rosetti is accused of using property, employees and services of the intermediate unit in Archbald or his own benefit and on the taxpayer's dime.

He made his first court appearance Wednesday at federal court in Scranton.

Just one day after a federal grand jury handed up an indictment accusing Fred Rosetti of dozens of crimes, he appeared in court to answer to those theft and fraud charges. He told the judge at his arraignment that he is not guilty.

As executive director of Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit #19, Fred Rosetti was one of the most powerful officials in public education in our area.

Now Rosetti faces charges he cheated taxpayers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars during his time with the NEIU.

According to the indictment, while Rosetti was working at NEIU headquarters in Archbald he used the organization's money for personal benefit and took vacations without documenting them. Prosecutors said the alleged fraud resulted in Rosetti getting a hefty $600,000 pay-out when he retired in 2010.

Rosetti was released following arraignment. He pleaded not guilty to the theft and fraud charges and his lawyer said they plan to take the case to trial.

"Fred Rosetti has been through a lot and he's anxious to get his side of this whole thing out in the open and let people know that not everything you read is the truth," said Rosetti's attorney Terri Pawelski.

The Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit #19 provides special education services to school districts in several counties in our area.

Fred Rosetti`s case is tentatively set to go to trial in April.
