A department store wants to fill 130 jobs in a part of our region where people struggle to find stable work.

Kohl's Department Stores held a job fair on Sunday, providing hope to job seekers wanting to get back into the workforce.

Over the next four days, more than 1,000 hopefuls are likely to step into a Pottsville hotel conference room, fill out a form, then hope for a call back.

They`re not alone. Schuylkill County has an unemployment rate of 8.8%.

In nearby Carbon County, unemployment stands higher than 10%.

Some believe the number is higher due to thousands who have given up looking for work.

“Industry has moved away from our area and there`s less opportunity, so we need more opportunities here in our area,” said Myriam Tirjan of Pine Grove.

The new Kohl`s will open in two months at the Fairlane Village Mall, and this job fair is about more than the 130 openings for cashiers, salespeople, and those who unload freight shipments.

Job seekers believe that the plan Kohl’s has to open a store in Schuylkill County shows the retailer`s confidence in the region`s future.

“Because it will mean more opportunities for more people,” said Tirjan.

People interested in working at Kohl's new Schuylkill County outlet can interview at the Ramada Inn in Pottsville on South Progress Avenue through Thursday.
