A man from Northumberland County was killed in a crash Thursday less than a mile from his house.

State police said Matthew Persing, 41, of Paxinos was driving south on Route 61 near Shamokin around 11:30 a.m.  when his truck hit a curb, causing his right front tire to blow out.

Troopers said that caused him to lose control of his truck.  Persing slid more than 100 feet and crashed into a tree.  He later died at the scene.

State police said there was no one else inside the truck and there were no other vehicles involved.  A section of Route 61 was closed for several hours to clean up the damage.

Witnesses who work at a nearby business said they ran outside when they heard a loud bang.  The two women watched the truck crash into the tree.

Troopers said Persing was on his way to the State Correctional Institute at Coal Township where he had worked as a sergeant for 13 years.  His supervisor said Persing was a good employee and everyone spoke highly of him.

State police said the truck's tire was the reason Persing lost control.  Troopers said speed and wet weather may have also played a role.
