    WILKES-BARRE — Officers in Wilkes-Barre arrested a man they said assaulted and pistol-whipped a person early Friday morning.     Cop Suspended Without Pay Following Deadly Crash

    WILLIAMSPORT — Newswatch 16 has learned Williamsport Police Officer Jonathan Deprenda has been suspended without pay. Deprenda is charged with homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter for his role in a deadly crash on the job earlier this year. According to state police, Deprenda was driving more than 100 mph before his cruiser slammed into another vehicle killing the driver.     Man Accused of Sexually Assaulting 15-Year-Old Girl

    SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP — Troopers in Bradford County filed charges against a man who investigators claim sexually assaulted a teenage girl. State police said Daniel Grubb, 32, raped the 15-year-old girl somewhere in Smithfield Township back in August.  Troopers did not mention where the assault took place. Grubb, who is from Ulster, faces charges of statutory sexual assault.

    Police: Man Robbed at Gunpoint in Rest Stop Bathroom

    GREENFIELD TOWNSHIP — State police are looking for three men who robbed a person in a bathroom at a rest stop on Interstate 81 in Lackawanna County. Troopers said it happened at the rest stop near Clarks Summit Tuesday night.     MAHANOY CITY — A woman is locked up and a man is on the run after a stabbing in Schuylkill County. Police in Mahanoy City said officers arrested Whitney Sutton after Tuesday night’s attack on West Center Street.  She faces robbery and assault charges. Authorities are still looking for Ronell Leary.  Authorities think he ran to the Philadelphia area. No names on the victims or how they are doing after the stabbing in Schuylkill County.

    Traffic on I-80 Slowed Following Tractor-Trailer Crash

    GREENE TOWNSHIP — Traffic on part of Interstate 80 in Clinton County is backed up after a big rig wrecked early Wednesday morning. It happened around 5:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-80 near the Jersey Shore Exit. Interstate 80 was shut down in that area briefly, but one lane has opened.  Police have not released any information on the condition of the driver or what caused the wreck.     HANOVER TOWNSHIP — The north lanes of the South Cross Valley Expressway in Luzerne County are shut down because of a crash. Crews said the crash happened just after 7:00 a.m. on Route 29 in Hanover Township.     FREELAND — An American Legion Post in Luzerne County is stuck cleaning up after a fire Tuesday night.   • Car Smashes Through Entrance of Mall at Steamtown

    SCRANTON — Scranton Police are trying to figure out why a driver smashed his car through the entrance at a mall Friday morning. Officers said the car went right through the window at Boscov’s at The Mall at Steamtown on Lackawanna Avenue around 5:45 a.m. A man was pulled out of the car and taken to the hospital. Authorities have not released the man’s current condition.

  • Man Accused of Murder Brought Back from NYC to Face Charges

    SHENANDOAH — A man wanted for murder has returned in Schuylkill County. Police believe Luis Ramos stabbed Wendy Contreras to death at a home along West Centre Street in Shenandoah back in late April. Authorities tracked him down in New York City later that same week.  Ramos had been in a jail in New York ever since. He faces criminal homicide and other charges.

    New Bar Opening in Wilkes-Barre

    WILKES-BARRE — A new bar is hoping to attract the college crowd in downtown Wilkes-Barre. Newswatch 16 found a “coming soon” sign for a bar called “Stir” along South Main Street. The website for the bar said it’s hiring new employees and expects to open sometime this fall. The bar in Wilkes-Barre has had several names and owners in recent years, most recently Joe K’s Brew House.
